Harry Potter: Book 2 Ch.17 by TheGeekCanPaint Harry Potter: Book 2 Ch.17 by TheGeekCanPaint

Gouache with coloured pencil on watercolour paper

I can not begin to describe how much I struggled with Fawkes in this painting. It started with a bad drawing, I should never have settled for, but I was so excited to start the painting... well consider my lesson learned. I’m happy with the way he ultimately turned out, though he still doesn’t look quite like any of the other drawings I’ve done of him, but I chalk that up to the angle. Birds look weird head on.

Besides that, I was really excited about this painting. I think it has a really fun composition with the twisting line of people trailing behind Fawkes. It all kind of fell into place as I was putting it together.

Someone might ask, why I chose this scene to illustrate for this chapter and not the Basilisk fight and there is a very simple explanation for that. I still have one more bonus double sized painting to do for this book. Just guess what scene it will be!

Well, I'm getting very very close to finishing all the illustrations for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Once it's completed, I plan to try and get my stuff published again, but before I do, I'll be putting together some kind of petition first, to send along with my proposal, to help convince them ("them" being the publishers of the Harry Potter books) to publish my stuff. So I'll be asking for yours and everyone else's help ;)

This time we have fun with composition and perspective. I think it turned out as well as your pictures usually tend to do!
I particularly like Harry's expression; he still seems not entirely convinced they're out of danger, and one cannot blame him for that!
Was Fawkes' description in the book particularly detailed (concerning this scene)? I have in mind him being all fiery and covered in flames, but it may be just my imagination ;) At any rate, I do enjoy your version, particularly his beak and eyes!

Thank you once again for such lovely compliments! I'm so glad you are enjoying my stuff.

It doesn't mention anything in the books about Fawkes being fiery at this moment, just that Harry feels warmth from him. When Fawkes appears, he does so in a blaze of fire, and the whole phoenix mythos involves them being able to generate flames and whatnot, so it certainly is understandable you'd imagine it... frankly, it's a good idea. It doesn't say he doesn't have some kind of mystical flame happening.

You're welcome! :)

I see. Of course, he did burst in flames when he was about to die (and to be reborn, of course), but I guess he doesn't have to fly around being fiery all the time ;)

Bloody brilliant. I wish I could view this full-screen; I'm sure there are a ton of details that I can't quite see. It's almost like a tease!
The pipes are amazing. The blood...the dirt...
I keep tipping my head around, looking at this from all angles...and just...grinning. So darn cool the way you did this. The human chain, Fawkes flying them out...it was a fascinating scene and you've done it beautifully.
Again, thank you for sharing your genius with us fans.

You trully flatter me with this compliment. You are being far to kind with your words, but I am very happy you are enjoying the painting. Thank you so much!

And I'm sorry it's not bigger, but I do have the hope to get these properly published someday, but that's less likely to happen if they're already out there for free ;) That said, you can see it a little better here: [link]
