Harry Potter: Book2, Ch.05 by TheGeekCanPaint Harry Potter: Book2, Ch.05 by TheGeekCanPaint
Gouache paints with coloured pencil and (very slight) airbrushing on watercolour paper.

I'm still trying to decide how I feel about this painting. I'm very happy with the lights of the car. And even though it's covered up by the tree, I liked how the castle looks (it looked better before I painted the tree over it)

But sometimes in my efforts to be real I lose a little of the nature of an illustration. See, being night time you can't see as much, and so the Whompping Willow get's lost a little even though it's right there dead center taking up the whole scene. But maybe that just makes it a little more mysterious!

Amazing lighting! I can't believe you achieved such effects using colored pencil! I'm so impressed!

Well, the coloured pencils I only use as touch ups at the end. Most of the painting is done with gouache paints.

Still, thanks for the compliment!

Ah I adore this! I've seen your HP art on various groups etc. but I'd say this is one of my favourites! I LOVE the darkness - it directs your vision towards the car, and in particular the artificial light of the car illuminates the natural power of the willow, and foreshadows its destructive nature :) The composition is wonderful, I love how the willow curves its way around the page, and Hogwarts is camouflaged behind its branches. Looks like the sort of vision you would expect to see strolling Hogwarts at night time!

Oh, I'm glad you like it! I've never felt right about the painting since I finished it. Don't missunderstnad, I haven't felt wrong about it enough to re-do it either ;) But it's defnintely nice to hear someone likes one of my paintings I'm not as sure about, it puts me a little more at ease :)

Thanks again!!!

Great lighting, and I love the composition, too. All the details of the Willow and Hogwarts being right next to each other could be too confusing, but you made it work.

Thank you so much! Originally I hadn't planed on putting Hogwarts in the background, but changed at the last second, figuring "why not". I was worried it wouldn't work, but I'm glad to hear it did :D

This is like one of the best things I've ever seen - and there's a lot of good things to see in this place!
The lights, the tree, the car, the casle... It's really amazing! You should be proud of yourself! :)

Mostly it's the gouache paints, I use the coloured pencils for touch and tightening ups.

Thank you so much for the compliments :)

:omg: this is crazy! As I've noticed that picture, I knew it's yours (here grammar doesn't work, but who cares!).
It's so impressive, even I have no words. I love details and Whompping Willow and Hogwarts and the way you drew lights in the car and - oh - everything in here.
Marvellous, personally I think it's my favourite of all your works.

It depends on the painting, but generally a painting like this one takes somewhere between 40-60 hours to do from the very beginning to the very end.

Thanks so much for the compliments!!

I actually painted most of the castle before adding the tree... I spent waaaay too much time on it considering how much is blocked by the tree.
