The Basilisk Fight by TheGeekCanPaint The Basilisk Fight by TheGeekCanPaint
30 x 20 Gouache paint with coloured pencil on watercolour paper.

Well, I’m closing in on finishing all the illustrations for “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”. I write this as I take a break from working on the re-do of the cover, then all I have left are some vignette drawings for the final chapter and one other little addition that I can do in an evening.

As for this painting itself... I’m pretty happy with it. I was a little disappointed when picking the exact moment I’d be illustrating, in order to show the most I wanted to show AND be a cool moment, I had to sacrifice painting the yellow eyes of the Basilisk. But, as I said, I’m happy with the rest. And the bloody sockets are pretty nifty in their own way.

My biggest trepidation with it will be when I try to formate it into the mock book. In “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s/Sorcerer’s Stone” I figured out how to do the fold out page, which will be the way I do Dumbledore’s Office for this book. But this one I plan to try and make it flip up instead of out. I’ll have to worry about that when I get to it.

When I do, I’ll be officially starting my “campaign” to officially get this stuff published. But first thing’s first.... I need to finish the book!

Thank you so very much! This "double size" painting wasn't quite as fun as Dumbledore's office was... but there was some very fun things to show ;)

This is very exciting. I can hear how noisy the scene must be just by looking at it. Everyone, including the statue, is yelling at Harry.

There's nothing I can say really that other's haven't said, but I just HAD to add my WOW.
Well, I guess I can add some things: I love how you made Riddle slightly transparent like he should be, and not quite fully-formed.
That sword really looks like it could kick some serious arse. I love the poisonous green look the basilisk has. Phew. Those blood eyes are bloody brilliant!
And..of course...the statue. I remember it being described as sort of monkey-ish. Although...I think a part of that was because JKR has a thing for describing people with animal characteristics.
This is epic.

So glad you like the painting. Thanks for all the compliments :)

And yes, J.K.R. did describe Slytherin's statue as looking "monkey-ish". I tried to do it, while still keeping him human. I read it as being "anchient" mostly.

Wow, the Basilisk's head and maw are superb! It (he?) doesn't look just like a big snake, but like a proper legendary monster. The flying Fawkes stands is the nice colouristic contrast to the beast.
And, while admiring the shading of SLytherin's statue, I came to look at his face. Dear gods, he looks even creepier than the Basilisk! D:

The compliments and kind words are much appreciated! Thank you so much :)

I'm glad you like my take on the basilisk - I was walking the line between making it look like a proper snake while still being a monster. And what you saw in the Slytherin statue is also good news; I just figured since he was the start of this whole thing, well, he had to have a streak of nastyness about him.

By now I should be used to your accuracy and wonderful wonderful details! But no.. you still surprise me! This is awesome! I have one question though.. the statue of Zalazar Slytherin.. Why is it looking so aggressive? I don't recall it looking like that - I kind of always thought it would be calm and aristocratic. Maybe you scrutinized the book better than I have :D

And!! I will definitely be rooting for you when your "campaign" starts!!

First of all, thank you for the compliments, I'm so glad you like the painting :)

Secondly, as for the aggressive look on the statue of Slytherin. It's not described in the book the exact look it has. And I would also think that in general, the man carried himself calmly and be more aristocratic with his fellow wizards, as you felt. But I guess I figured, the fact that he created the chamber in secret and was out to kill muggle born students with a basilisk... the dude had some pent up rage that would be reflected in the statue.

And lastly, it's nice to know I'll have your support ;)

Thanks so much!!!

Oh.. I see, that makes sense! By the way - He looks a little like Rasputin from Anastasia [link] maybe you have seen the movie?

No problem! I just really love your style. The details and the diligence! Simply amazing! Can't wait to see what you come up with for the other books.. The room of requirement for example.. I would loooove to see your version of the room where students hid their things through the ages! :D

Ha! Yes he does have a "Rasputin-ness" about him. I haven't seen the movie in a while, but am quite familiar with it - it has some of the most lovely music in it, and I really wish they'd turn it into a stage show.

I both fear and look forward to doing the room of requirement ;) But it's nice to know someone is looking forward to my take on it!

That is true! The music is lovely! I watched it just recently on Netflix when I had a cold. Nothing better to fight of a cold than a cartoon I used to watch when I was a child :D

After your Dumbledore's office how can I anything else than look forward to your room of requirement!!

Go Fawkes! This was a very exciting scene which made up for the rest of the book being "so-so" in my opinion (but only compared to the rest of the books in the series). The Basilisk is terrifying and I really like how you posed Tom with his foot on top of the unconscious Ginny--it really speaks about her being unwillingly under his control. That is one amazing statute of Salazar Slytherin. He looks just as terrifying as the monster that he bred in the Chamber! I also like his serpentine beard! Your HP art is so amazing. Each time I look at it I notice things that I hadn't noticed before and am reminded of how much I love this series. :iconbigheartplz:

I can't remember if I've said it before, but I agree about CoS being a "so-so" book in comparison to the rest of the series. But it was a nesessary book and there were a handful of fun moments to illustrate; this being one of them.

I'm glad you like the painting and that it's bringing you back to why you like the series... that's such a nice thing to hear. It's like my art is doing it's job and just what I want it to do.

Thanks!

Thanks so much! Yeah, the movie's statue had a cool look I suppose, but it just wasn't what was described in the book. Perhaps if they hadn't felt the need to have Harry crawl on it, it could have been more accurate, but oh well.

I had to look twice, I almost thought Tom had a moustache...

LOL - it is a wide open mouth kind of scene isn't it :) And as for the moustache, no he doesn't have one, just shadows. But I did base Tom on Hitler, so maybe you were picking up on that ;)
